Do You Know Succinic Anhydride?

Succinic anhydride has a nice nickname called Succinic acid anhydride. Its English abbreviation is SAA. Succinic anhydride is an organic compound with the chemical formula C4H4O3. It is a white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water and ether, soluble in chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, and ethanol. Succinic anhydride has a wide range of applications, which mainly plays an important role in the fields of medicine and agrochemicals.

Production Methods Of Succinic Anhydride

1.Catalytic Hydrogenation of Maleic Anhydride 

Using maleic anhydride as raw material, maleic anhydride can be hydrogenated at 160°C and 5.8MPa in the presence of palladium-alumina catalyst to produce succinic anhydride. The conversion rate was 98.8%. The selectivity of succinic anhydride is 100%. (Use copper molybdate as a catalyst, 1,4-dioxane as a solvent, and hydrogenate at 120-160°C under a pressure of 20.26MPa to obtain the product.)

2.Succinic Acid Dehydration Method

Succinic acid can be dehydrated to generate succinic anhydride by heating above 260°C or adding a certain amount of tetrahydronaphthalene and toluene, and heating to above 200°C at the same time. The content and yield of the obtained succinic acid are both about 90%. The dehydration process of succinic acid can also be carried out in the presence of dehydrating agents such as acetic anhydride, phosphorus pentoxide, and phosphorus oxychloride. For example, heat succinic acid and phosphorus oxychloride to reflux to exhaust hydrogen chloride gas, then distill under reduced pressure, collect fractions at 160-165°C (5.33kPa), and obtain white block succinic anhydride after cooling.

Applications Of Succinic Anhydride

1.Used in organic synthesis, it is the raw material of alkyd resin, adhesive resin and anthraquinone dye for coating.

2.Succinic anhydride is an intermediate of the fungicide sclerotin and the plant growth regulator butylhydrazide.

3.Succinic anhydride is a raw material for paints, medicines, synthetic resins and dyes. Coatings made from succinic anhydride are flex and water resistant.

4.It is used in medicine to produce vitamin A and sulfonamides, analgesics, diuretics, painkillers, antipyretics, anti-inflammatory, contraceptive, anticancer and other drugs.

5.It can be used in the production of fungicides, insecticides, and plant growth regulators in pesticides.

6.Succinic anhydride and its derivatives can be used as olefin polymerization catalysts, crosslinking agents for ester polymer condensation products, light stabilizers for polymers, ultraviolet absorbers, etc., and also used as oilfield additives. Succinic anhydride can also produce plasticizers. There are also many uses in defense systems.

7.Succinic anhydride is an important intermediate in organic synthesis. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is mainly used to synthesize sodium chloramphenicol succinate, sodium hydroxyprogesterone succinate, sodium hydrocortisone succinate, etc.

8.Succinic anhydride can be used as an analytical reagent, and can also be used in the pharmaceutical industry and the synthesis of ester resins.
