Dimethylacetamide is N, N-dimethylacetamide (abbreviated as DMAC or DMA), also known as acetyldimethylamine, dimethylamine acetate. Dimethylacetamide is a representative amide solvent, and commonly known as “solvent king” N, N-dimethylformamide mutual homolog, known as the universal solvent.

(1)DMAC has a strong solubility, a wide range of dissolved substances, for organic solvents such as benzene, aromatic compounds, esters, ketones, alcohols, ethers can be arbitrarily mixed, of water can also be very good miscibility. In addition, DMAC has the effect of activating compound molecules, so it is widely used as a solvent and catalyst.

(2)Because of its high boiling point, high flash point, good thermal and chemical stability, DMAC is widely used as a solvent. Mainly used in the production of polyacrylonitrile as a drawing solvent, but also used in synthetic resin, natural resin, vinyl formate production, vinyl pyridine and other polymers and aromatic carboxylic acid production separation solvent; In addition, N, N-dimethylacetamide is also used as an electrolyte solvent and a solvent for color forming agents used in photography, a solvent for removing paint, and a raw material for organic synthesis.

(3)DMAC is also used as an extractive distillation solvent for separating styrene from C8 fractions of petrochemical feedstock. Another feature of DMAC is its use as a catalyst. In chemical production, dimethylacetamide can accelerate the cyclation, halogenation, cyanation, alkylation and dehydrogenation of organic synthesis, And significantly increase the yield of the main product of the reaction. The main applications include catalytic processes such as cyanuric acid production from urea, reaction of alkyl halides with metal cyanide to nitrile, reaction of alkyl halides with sodium acetylene to alkyl acetylene, reaction of organic halides with cyanate to isocyanate. Pesticide and pharmaceutical raw materials also involve N, N-dimethylacetamide as a solvent or cocatalyst, currently in medicine and pesticides with dimethylacetamide to synthesize antimicrobials and pesticides insecticides, compared with traditional organic solvents, the product quality and yield have improved effect.

(4)In view of the advantages of good solubility of DMAC, it is mainly used as a solvent spinning polymer synthetic fibers and other polar solvents for organic synthesis in China. DMAC was used as a solvent to extract butadiene ethylene cracking gas C4, which has obvious advantages compared with other solvents. DMAC is also widely used as a solvent to separate and purify benzene, cyclohexane, cyclohexene and other raw materials in the production of nylon 66 salt cyclohexanol. Polyimide film, soluble Polyimide, Polyimide-polyfluoroethylenepolyimide-polyfluoroethylene propylene composite film, Polyimide (aluminum) film, soluble Polyimide molding powder YS-20, etc. Which are synthesized from DMAC, have been widely used.

(5)DMAC is also involved in the production of acrylic fibers. At present, according to the different classification of selected solvents, the main methods for the domestic production of acrylic fibers are sodium thiocyanate two-step method, dimethylformamide one-step method and dimethylacetamide organic wet method. No matter from the process and equipment characteristics, material consumption, environmental impact, product quality or post-processing performance, domestic and foreign development trends and other factors, the DMAC organic wet method has on far-reaching development prospects. 

(6)The advantages of N, N-dimethylacetamide are: good thermal stability, high boiling point, easy hydrolysis, low corrosion, low toxicity, and are widely used in organic synthesis as excellent polar solvents and catalysts in organic reactions. In the production of most organic raw materials, many devices use the same line of dimethylformamide as a solvent, compared with dimethylacetamide, its thermal stability is poor, hydrolysis stability is not high, corrosion of equipment, especially higher toxicity than DMAC, greater harm to human body. The chroma of the product is much different from that of foreign products, and the quality and chroma of the product are improved significantly after changing to dimethylacetamide as solvent, which can meet the export requirements. Therefore, in the future solvent, N, N-dimethylacetamide can gradually replace dimethylformamide as an excellent solvent.
