The function and usage of diflubenzuron

Diflubenzuron, also known as Dimilin, is a juvenile hormone analog insecticide belonging to the benzoylurea class. It was discovered in the 1970s as an insect growth regulator and has proven to be effective against a wide range of insect pests. Today, let’s discuss the functions and usage of Diflubenzuron.

The role of diflubenzuron

Diflubenzuron is relatively stable to light and heat and exhibits strong toxicity to arthropods and silkworms, but it does not pose harm to humans, animals, or the environment, making it a low-toxicity and environmentally friendly pesticide. Its primary mode of action is by inhibiting chitin synthesis in insects, restricting the formation of a new exoskeleton during molting, leading to deformities and eventually causing the death of the insects. However, this process takes a relatively long time.

Diflubenzuron is suitable for use on various plants, including fruit trees such as apples, pears, and citrus; crops like corn, wheat, rice, and peanuts; various vegetable varieties; and trees like tea plants. It is mainly used to control lepidopteran pests such as cabbage worms, beet armyworms, diamondback moths, oriental fruit moths, whiteflies, tea leaf rollers, bollworms, pine processionary caterpillars, and leaf miners.

Diflubenzuron usage

As Diflubenzuron is a juvenile hormone analog insecticide, it is not suitable for application during the high or mature stages of pests. It is most effective when applied during the early stages of pest development. For example, in the control of tea caterpillars and tea tortrix moths, Diflubenzuron suspension concentrate (20%) can be used at a rate of 25-50 milliliters per mu, diluted with 50-75 liters of water for spraying. Care should be taken to target the undersides of tea leaves. For cotton bollworms, cabbage worms, and other crop pests, Diflubenzuron suspension concentrate (20%) can be used at a rate of 5-12.5 grams per mu, diluted with a ratio of 3000-6000 times.

Before using Diflubenzuron, it should be shaken well. Since it can decompose when in contact with alkaline substances, it should not be mixed with alkaline pesticides. Additionally, Diflubenzuron exhibits strong toxicity to arthropods and silkworms, so it should be kept away from aquaculture areas and silkworm rearing regions when applying it.
