What is the New Application of DMAC (Dimethylacetamide) ?

Currently, the annual demand for dimethylacetamide (DMAC) in China is over 13 kt, particularly with a significant growth in demand for pharmaceutical intermediates and pesticides in recent years. The electronic industry has also shown a noticeable increase in demand for high-quality DMAC. The market usage of DMAC as a solvent, especially in applications such as polyacrylonitrile spinning, imide resins, and insulation materials, is gradually expanding. There are less than 10 manufacturers of DMAC in China, with a total national production capacity of 3000 t/a and an actual output of 2000-2500 t/a, which can effectively meet domestic market demand. There are no official customs statistics on the import and export volumes of DMAC. Due to DMAC’s excellent solvency properties for various resins, it is primarily used as a solvent in heat-resistant fibers, plastic films, coatings, pharmaceuticals, catalysts, and acrylic fiber spinning. The market prospects for DMAC are promising due to its favorable outlook in these applications.

1.Pharmaceutical Intermediates

DMAC is an important pharmaceutical raw material widely used in the production of drugs such as amoxicillin and cephalosporins. It acts as a solvent or co-catalyst and offers improved product quality and yield compared to traditional organic solvents. In 2000, the demand for DMAC in the pharmaceutical industry was approximately 6 kt, and it increased to around 9.6 kt in 2006.

2.Acrylic Fiber Production

DMAC is utilized in the production of acrylic fibers. Some processes in domestic acrylic fiber production employ DMAC as a solvent. Various factors, such as process and equipment characteristics, material consumption, environmental impact, product quality, post-processing performance, domestication rate, and foreign development trends, contribute to the increased research and promotion of DMAC in the industry. Among the different methods, the two-step method using sodium cyanide and the organic wet method using DMAC show the most promising development prospects. Currently, several domestic acrylic fiber facilities adopt the wet process using DMAC as a solvent.

3.Polymer Synthesis

DMAC exhibits excellent solvency for various resins, especially polyurethane and polyimide resins. It is primarily used as a solvent in the synthesis of heat-resistant fibers, plastic films, coatings, pharmaceuticals, and acrylic fiber spinning. Internationally, DMAC is commonly employed in the production of polyimide films, soluble polyimides, polyimide-polyvinylidene fluoride composite films, soluble polyimide molding powders, and more. In the domestic market, it is mainly used as a solvent for synthetic fiber spinning and other organic synthesis processes.

4.Organic Pigments

DMAC is used as a solvent in the production of organic pigments. While many facilities previously used dimethylformamide (DMF) as a solvent, switching to DMAC has resulted in significant improvements in product quality and color matching, meeting the requirements for export.

5.Petrochemical Industry

 DMAC serves as an excellent catalyst in petrochemical processes. It accelerates reactions such as cyclization, halogenation, cyanation, alkylation, and dehydrogenation, while enhancing the yield of primary products.

6.Other Applications

DMAC is used as a solvent in various processes. For example, it is employed as a solvent for extracting butadiene from ethylene cracking gas in several domestic and international facilities. In nylon 66 salt-cyclohexanol plants, DMAC is extensively used as a solvent for separating pure benzene, cyclohexane, and cyclohexene. In pesticide production, DMAC can be used as a solvent or co-catalyst, offering improved product quality and yield compared to traditional organic solvents.

These applications demonstrate the promising market prospects for DMAC due to its excellent solvency properties and versatile uses in multiple industries.
